I have wondered about this cover for years - what is actually on the plate?

My best guess is a half eaten Moonpie sitting in some sort of hot syrup ...  Anyone got a better idea?  No matter what it was, Peter Pynchon's photo made for one unappetizing cover,

  1. Maybe it's red-eye gravy? Or a splash of one of those scarlet Southern soda pops, like "Cheerwine" or "Big Red"? (After seeing kids of Southern descent in my old neighborhood putting pickles in grape soda, dunking a Moon Pie in pop doesn't sound too bad by comparison.)
