THE YARDBIRDS "LIVE FEATURING JIMMY PAGE"

Artist: The Yardbirds
Album: Live Featuring Jimmy Page
Label: Epic
Catalog: E 30615
Year: 1971
Genre: rock
Grading: VG+ cover / VG+ LP
Quantity: 1
Cover Designer: not listed
Cover art: James Grashow
Grade: **** stars

One of rock's most infamous albums.  Epic Records has released "Live Yardbirds Featuring Jimmy Page" at least twice (once in 1971 and once in 1976).  Both times Page threatened legal action over the crappy sound quality and both times the album was quickly withdrawn.  Anyhow, I'm more interested in the cover art (if you've ever heard the album the sound quality is simply abysmal making it easy to see why Page threatened a lawsuit).

The striking cover was designed by American sculpture/woodcut artist James Grashow.  Grashow had enjoyed a bit of earlier success having designed Jethro Tull's "Stand Up" album cover.

Today he's widely known for his work in cardboard...  seriously.  One of the most interesting documentaries I've recent scene was  entitled Cardboard Bernini, describing the creation, exhibition, decay, and destruction of an enormous Trevi Fountain inspired cardboard project he built.

Goodhall's a complete unknown to me - good luck finding anything about the man online.  That said, how can you go wrong with a painting that features old cars and guitars ?  This one just makes me smile whenever I look at it.

The album's lukewarm commercial pop with a heavy emphasis on ballads.  The anonymous cover is actually better than the music.  Great subject, great colors ... almost has kind of an Andy Warhol feel to it.

I had no idea Frank Bez had done so many magazine and album covers - Johnny Cash, Harry Chapin, etc.   Esquire did a nice interview with him at: http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/music/a20154/frank-bez-johnny-cash-15159370/ Regardless, this cover of Ry Cooder on the El Mirage dry lake is just so cool.  And posing him in front of a 1937 Airstream trailer ...

I have a younger son who is a Boy Scout, so this one's got kind of a personal connection.  That said, I never quite got the concept which shows the character seemingly morphing from some sort of "creature" into a Scout.  Imagine a Norman Rockwell scene on meds.

I found a link to Hopkins' website where he actually mentions the cover: "I don't believe that I have painted anything particularly famous but I still receive email and other correspondence about the Styx "Paradise Theater" album cover art and cover art for Oingo Boingo's album "Only A Lad." I find this both funny and disturbing since I painted both of those 27 years ago and I hope that I have improved since then. However, lovers of old theatres and Styx fans really aren't interested in anything else that I've painted. I also did the theme art for Super Bowls 20, 21, and 23, and the movie marquee art for "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and they're really well known."

I knew who Traffic were when I bought this album, but have to admit it was one of the first albums I ever bought more for the packaging than the music.  Not that "On the Road" was bad - nah, just kind of long, plodding, and mid-'70s self-indulgent ...  On the other hand, Ann Borthwick's cover art was very cool in a detached, almost clinical fashion.  And Borthwick's a complete mystery to me - I've wasted a lot of time trying to locate some information on the artist.  Someone out there must has some insight into the woman ...

Yes, Polish painter/designer Roslabv Szaybo's cover came dangerously close to Love Story territory, but I still love the piece.

Szaybo's designed some other classic rock album covers - you'll have to poke around the blog to find them.  Anyhow, here's the man's abbreviated bio:

Graduated in 1961 at Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, mentored by Wojciech Fangor and Henryk Tomaszewski.

In 1966 he moved to United Kingdom where he worked as an independent designer. Between 1968 and 1972 worked as an art director in advertising company Young & Rubicam. Between 1972 and 1988 he was signed as chief artistic director in CBS Records, where he designed over 2000 album covers, mostly for the classical music, but also for the artists like Elton John, Roy Orbison, Santana, Janis Joplin, The Clash and John Williams. During his work in the UK he was also designing posters for English theaters. Since his return to Poland in 1993 he had started a photography workshop at Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and also became an artistic director at Czytelnik publishing house.

SANDY DENNY "SANDY"

Artist: Sandy Denny
Album: Denny

Year: 1972
Genre: rock
Grading: VG+ cover / VG+ LP
Quantity: 1
Cover Designer: David Bailey
Photographer: David Bailey
Grade: ***** stars

I'll readily admit I'm not a gigantic fan of English folk-rock bands Like Fairport Convention, early Strawbs, and Steeleye Span, but I make an exception for the late Sandy Denny.  There's just something special in her voice - not to sound hyper-sensitive, but the woman could sing a phonebook listing and make you sit up and take notice. Her voice is instantly recognizable and she managed to pack so much emotion into a song, you just had to wonder how a young English woman could pull that trick off.  That's high praise from a guy from Alabama.  From what little I've read about her life, Denny was a tough, if highly troubled woman.  I've seen photos of her where she looked like she could take care of herself in any brawl.  I'm not sure you would have considered her beautiful in the traditional sense of the word, but then that's one of the things that makes the David Bailey album cover so stunning.  Not only did Bailey managed to capture a stunning picture of Denny (she really did look gorgeous), but she looked peaceful, relaxed, and comfortable on the album cover.  It made for a stunning cover.

For anyone interested, the British National Portrait Gallery will sell you an unframed copy for about $20:  http://www.npgprints.com/image/675484/david-bailey-sandy-denny

I guess it's just a personal issue, but every time I see this cover it makes me shudder - nothing against the attractive and talented Marge Raymond, but there's just something very disconcerting about the cover showing her twisted like a pretzel.

It wasn't a particularly impressive tax scam release, but it had a fascinating history (which you can read at about at http://nightflight.com/newpost/) and the dayglo colored Andy Warhol-meets Roy Lichtenstein’s comic book-style cover was certainly eye catching.

Not only did it take me a couple of years to figure out how funny it was to name a Southern rock band Nantucket, but it took me even longer to appreciate Robert Grossman's funny cover.

It wasn't until I actually looked at the cover closely that I realized Grossman was responsible for dozens and dozens of magazine covers I'd seen over the years, let along dozens of album covers.

After all these years I still can't wrap my ears around John McLaughlin and his all-star cast of jazz-rock fusioners ...  I know this stuff was technically spectacular, but after all these year I continue to find it dull, plodding, and self-pretentious. I guess I'm not alone since I can remember my local Penguin Feather record store having piles of the album on sale for like a dollar a pop.  I've tried to get it,but I just don't have the proper outlook, or DNA.  In fact, Chris Poisson's cover was the album's creative highlight for me.  The psychedelic colors were certainly eye catching, but so was that neat Pointillism he employed.  Imagine Georges Seurat, or Paul Signac having designed a Mahavsihnu Orchestra cover ...

I typically highlight cover art that captures my attention for its positive attributes. Once in awhile I'll see a cover that's so gawdawful it deserves attention.  Here's one.  The airbrushed cover screams early-'70s, but in a bad way.  Like your 13 year old having grabbed some spray cans on gone nuts on the neighbor's sports car ... Seriously, how long do you think it to execute this cover ?   Twenty minutes ?  If you'd tagged a New York subway car with this the patrons would have covered it up ...

THE EAGLES "HOTEL CALIFORNIA"

Artist: The Eagles
Album: Hotel California

Year: 1976

Genre: rock
Grading: VG+ cover / VG+ LP
Quantity: 1
Cover Designer: Don Henley and John Kosh
Photo: David Alexander
Grade: **** stars

I'd really planned to avoid the obvious picks - the ones that show up on all of the top-100 lists, but my older son has been trying to learn the lead guitar chords for 'Hotel California' and after hearing weeks of practice I figured I needed to pull the album out and given a spin for the first time in a decade.  Since I own the original vinyl (complete with the poster insert), I couldn't help but gaze at the David Alexander cover - it's a classic.

I saw an interview with Henley where he described wanting a cover that captured "Faded glory, loss of innocence and decadence," "I was trying to use California as the microcosm for the rest of the nation."

Henley approach designer John Kosh with the project and Kosh and photographer David Alexander went to shoot the sun sinking behind the elegant Beverly Hills Hotel. To clear the trees surrounding the hotel, they had to clamber aboard a sixty-foot cherry picker and dangle over rush-hour traffic on Sunset Boulevard.

The cover art ended up costing $60,000 - a small price given the album's massive sales.

A quick word about Tom Wilkes striking cover art ...  You can't really get the 3D effect here, but the embossed cover reflected what was obviously a condom in a wallet.    I still find it somewhat amazing that ABC was willing to release such a daring and perhaps tasteless cover ...  and yes, even tough tasteless, it is included on my list of favorite covers.

It's kind of funny - when it was released in Australia, the original album title "Sex, Dope, Rock 'n' Roll: Teenage Heaven" created a storm of controversy with some Australian retailers refusing to stock the LP.  In the States the set was given an abbreviated title "Teenage Heaven" and different cover art, though I'm not sure what was wrong with the original Australian cover.

Admittedly concert cover shots aren't particularly original, but this one's always struck me as being kind of cool ...  I believe this one was taken at a July 1978 concert the band gave at New York's Central Park. That's me on the front - fifth row up, 35 over from the left.   Just kidding.

The late Vivian Stanshall is all but unknown to American audiences and his 1974 debut album never even saw an American release (it reportedly sold 5,000 copies before being deleted from the Warner Brothers catalog).  Musically it's a weird combination of English comedy and some of the most gut wrenching self loathing you'll ever hear - probably not something for the average top-40 listener.  If interested, you can find a more detailed description at: http://badcatrecords.com/BadCat/STANSHALL.htm

Anyhow, meant to invoke a traffic sign, Peter Till's cover is simply eye catching.  I can't tell you how long I've spent gazing at the cover.

Musically this was one of Brian Eno's most straightforward and commercial collections.  Clearly you'll want to take that with a great of salt (it is an Eno album).  Still, full of mainstream melodies and surprisingly impressive vocals, it was a collection that most folks would be able to sit through without having to make a dash for the door.

As for the cover art, well Ritva Saarikko's stark black and white photo of the man was simply stunning.

Born in 1959, I was simply too young to have been actively aware of the mid-'60s struggle for equal rights.  That said, this is one of those rare album covers that instantly grabbed me and simply made me think ...  Surrounded by tear gas and chaos, can you imagine how much courage and faith these two young women must have had?  I've frequently wondered who they were and what became of them.  I can only hope life proved kind to them and I can only pray that if ever tested, I'd be blessed with as much strength and courage.

There's something unique and disquieting in Don Peterson's pixilated photo of the band.   It's like something out of one of those '80s B horror flicks - the spooks are coming through the TV to grab your soul.  Anyhow, the cover was actually far better than the album itself.

I must have owned this album a decade before the grisly back panel made an impact.  I'm sure I'd actually seen the image, but for some odd reason the sight of two men hanging from an old tree just never registered with me.   Truly disturbing - though the album itself is a classic, if virtually unknown country-rock release.

I looked around for a good photo that would show how cool the Tony Lane designed gimmick cover was, but couldn't find one that really showed it off.  Best I could find was the  photo to the left which sort of displays the cover's unique four profile flap design.  If you can't make it out, the cover features cutout silhouettes of the four band members under colored profile flaps. I've never bothered to figure out which profile belong to which member - I think the red one is John Fogerty's.  Someone out there will know which is which.  Anyhow, the clever (and costly) cover certainly wasn't something you would have ever expected from a label like Fantasy.
